Hospital Description

Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, commonly known as Jinja Hospital, is a hospital in the city of Jinja, eastern Uganda. It is the Regional Referral Hospital for eight surrounding districts and the largest hospital in eastern Uganda. The hospital has 600 beds for the inpatient admission, although usually more patients are admitted and you might oberve patients sleeping on the hospital floor. As a intern or elective student you will have the chance to intern alongside with interns from Ugandan medical schools and under the supervision of local professionals.

Typical day and tasks of an intern

A typical week will take place from Monday -Thursday, from 9am – 3pm. If you need to complete projects for your school or would like to further your experience, you are welcome to stay beyond these hours. Fridays are flexible and you will be scheduled to take part in the community experiences such as helping to paint a classroom for the local school children, teaching children at the orphanages basic English, helping support local sustainable projects such as bee-keeping (for honey production), tree planting or sustainable methods of farming. These experiences are flexible and of course you do not have to take part but we strongly encourage that you do as it will immerse you into the true Ugandan culture and traditions.
